Use your GoDaddy web address for your ChooseLocal page

No technical knowledge needed. Follow the pictures, one click at a time. It takes about 10 minutes.

What you're doing, in plain words

Your web address works like a signpost. Right now it points at your old website, or at nothing. You're going to turn the signpost so it points at your ChooseLocal page. Your page doesn't change, and your email keeps working.

You'll need

  • About 10 minutes.
  • The email you use for ChooseLocal.
  • The login for the company you bought your address from.

Rather not do it yourself? Email team@gowtom.tech with your address and we'll do it with you.

Part 1 · 2 minutes

In ChooseLocal

Did we build your site for you? Then we've already done this part. Skip to Part 2.

  1. Step 1: Open Domain settings

Sign in at chooselocal.ie. Open your business. Click Domain settings.

Your business page in ChooseLocal with the Domain settings button highlighted
  2. Step 2: Type your address and click Save

Type your address with www at the start, for example www.yourbusiness.ie. Then click Save.

Don't worry about the version without www. It will work too.

Domain settings in ChooseLocal: www.yourbusiness.ie typed into Your domain, with the Save button highlighted
  3. Step 3: Leave this page open

ChooseLocal now shows two rows, under DNS record. You'll copy them in Part 2, so keep this page open in its own tab.

It says Pending. That's normal: it changes when you finish Part 3.

After saving, ChooseLocal shows two rows to copy: Type A, Name @, and Type CNAME, Name www

Part 2 · 7 minutes

In GoDaddy

Only change the two rows this guide shows you. Leave everything else in GoDaddy as it is.

  1. Step 4: Open your address in GoDaddy

Open a new tab. Sign in at godaddy.com. Go to My Domains. Click your address.

GoDaddy's list of your web addresses, with yourbusiness.ie highlighted
  2. Step 5: Click DNS

Click the DNS tab. This is the list of settings that say where your address goes.

  3. Step 6: Find the two rows

Look for these two rows. They are the only ones you'll change:

    • the row with A under Type and @ under Name (@ means your address on its own);
    • the row with CNAME under Type and www under Name.
GoDaddy's list of settings with two rows highlighted: Type A, Name @, and Type CNAME, Name www
  4. Step 7: Change the A row

Click the pencil at the end of the A row. Click into the Value box and delete what's there. Paste this instead: 216.198.79.1

    Click Save.

No A row? Click Add New Record, pick A, type @ in Name, paste the value above, and click Save. Two A rows? Delete the second one with its bin icon. Already says 76.76.21.21? Leave it; that works too.

Changing the A row in GoDaddy: Value set to 216.198.79.1, then Save
  5. Step 8: Change the www row

Click the pencil at the end of the CNAME www row. Leave Name as it is: just www. Click into Value, delete what's there, and paste: cname.vercel-dns.com

    Click Save.

Don't type your full address in the Name box. GoDaddy adds it for you. No www row? Click Add New Record, pick CNAME, type www in Name.

Changing the www row in GoDaddy: Name stays www, Value set to cname.vercel-dns.com.
  6. Step 9: Check Forwarding is off

Click the Forwarding tab. Both boxes should say Not set up.

One shows a web address instead? Delete it. Forwarding would send your visitors somewhere else.

GoDaddy Forwarding tab: both boxes say Not set up
  7. Step 10: Check Nameservers

Click the Nameservers tab. It should say Using default nameservers.

It says something else? Stop here and email us. It means your settings are kept with another company, and we'll tell you where.

  8. Step 11: Only if ChooseLocal showed a third row: add it

Most people skip this. If step 3 showed a third row with TXT under Type, click Add New Record, pick TXT, and copy its Name (usually _vercel) and Value from ChooseLocal exactly. Click Save.

Part 3 · 1 minute

Back in ChooseLocal

  1. Step 12: Click Check verification

Go back to the ChooseLocal tab. Click Check verification. When you see a green Verified, you're done.

Still says Pending? That's normal for a while. Try again in 15 minutes. It nearly always works within an hour.

What happens next

  • Your page shows on your address within an hour, often within minutes.
  • Both yourbusiness.ie and www.yourbusiness.ie open your page.
  • In the first few minutes your browser may warn that the page is "not secure". That goes away by itself.
  • Your email keeps working. You didn't touch the settings it uses.
  • Google keeps showing your business, and your Google reviews stay exactly as they are.

Not working after an hour?

  • Still seeing your old website? Check step 9 (Forwarding), and that there's only one A row.
  • Check the two values again. The Copy buttons above avoid typing mistakes.
  • Try your phone with Wi-Fi turned off. Your computer may be remembering the old website.

Still stuck? Email team@gowtom.tech with your address. We'll sort it out with you.
